Brandon Capital Partners currently manages two funds, the $50 million Brandon Biosciences Fund 1 (BBF1) and the $30 million Medical Research Commercialisation Fund (MRCF). Brandon Capital Partners also has a direct co-investment agreement with two institutional investors. Its predecessor, Brandon Capital Management, manages the Australian Biomedical Funds Nos. 1 & 2 and the Australian Biotechnology & Healthcare Fund No.3 each of which are now fully invested.
Brandon Biosciences Fund 1 (BBF1) |
BBF1 comprises the $40 million BBF1 IIF Partnership, LP (BBF1 IIF) and the $10 million Brandon Bioscience Fund 1 Trust (BBF1 Trust). Brandon Capital Partners established the BBF1 IIF Partnership, LP in 2008 as a Venture Capital Limited Partnership (VCLP) under an Innovation Investment Fund license (Round 3) from the Commonwealth of Australia (administered through the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research). The investors include Statewide Superannuation and Westscheme, two of Australia’s leading industry super funds as well as the Commonwealth of Australia. A $10 million companion trust, BBF1 Trust, has also been established which can co-invest alongside the BBF1 IIF Partnership.
BBF1 will invest up to $5m into emerging life science companies with high-growth potential that are commercialising Australian innovations. Investment decisions are based primarily on the track record of the team, quality of technology, intellectual property protection, market opportunity and growth potential.

Medical Research Commercialisation Fund (MRCF) |
The Medical Research Commercialisation Fund (MRCF) investment trust was established in 2007 as an innovative investment collaboration which invests in life science opportunities from its member medical research institutes. The $30m fund provides its member institutes benefit from access to risk tolerant investment funds for proof-of-principle experiments as well as for the formation of new companies. The objective of each participating Institute is, through the collaboration, to enable the commercialisation of their intellectual property through a structured funded process to realise its value. The fund provides its investors, Statewide Superannuation and Westscheme, with early access to investment opportunities from Australia’s leading medical research institutes and their affiliated hospitals/research organisations.
Opportunities at the ‘project’ stage can receive investment of up to $200,000 whilst those at the stage of company formation can receive up to $2m of investment.
The Trustee of the MRCF is MRCF Pty Ltd. The MRCF benefits from its independent trustee board members that include the Hon. Alan Stockdale (Chair), Winsome Hall, Ross King, Denise Allen and Wayne McMaster, and values the financial support it receives from the State Governments of New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia.

The Australian Biomedical Funds 1 and 2 and Australian Biotechnology & Healthcare Fund No. 3, totalling $9 million, were established in 1999 and 2000 as Pooled Development Funds (PDF) registered under the Pooled Development Funds Act 1992. These three funds are managed by Brandon Capital Management and are invested in Australian life science businesses.
These funds are all now fully invested.
